Part I: Qualifying (Written) Congenital Examination

The congenital written examination is designed primarily to assess cognitive skills. The content of the questions on this examination represents uniform coverage of all aspects of the congenital heart surgery specialty.

The American Board of Thoracic Surgery (ABTS) will administer the 2024 Part I (Written) congenital examination in an electronic format. The written examination will be administered on December 9-13, 2024. The examination is given at Pearson Testing Centers, which are located throughout the United States.

Eligible applicants will receive an email notification when the application period is open. If your initial congenital application is approved, the ABTS will notify you via email. If approved, you will need to register for the Part I (Written) Exam through Pearson. Information on how to register with them will be sent via email. Candidates must also pay the examination fee.
