The American Board of Thoracic Surgery (ABTS) is partnering with the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) to support candidates and early-career Diplomates with an excellent research opportunity. The ABMS Visiting Scholars ProgramTM
facilitates research and leadership development through engagement with the ABMS and the broader certification community.
The ABTS research priorities are: 1) Implicit Bias, 2) Development of a database which links the current taxonomies with critical cardiothoracic surgical literature to foster a more comprehensive and representative Written and MOC Exam, and 3) Identify the program factors that lead to success on the Certifying Exam.
The ABMS research priorities are: 1) Diagnostic excellence within and across specialties, 2) Competency-based medical education and assessment across the medical education continuum, 3) Racial Equity and diversity across the health care continuum, and 4) Physicians engagement in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
During the year-long program, the ABMS Visiting Scholars remain at their home institution and work with self-selected mentors. They participate in monthly interactive webinars where they provide research project updates to their peers and a selected panel of subject matter experts and Visiting Scholars alumni who provide guidance, support, and solutions to barriers they may be experiencing in their research work.
The program begins each year in September. Scholars traditionally attend three in-person leadership meetings and present their research findings before a national audience at the ABMS Conference. Scholars say that the program helps their career path, advance their research aspirations and forge-long term relationships.
Up to two awards of $15,000/each will be provided to support the direct costs of research and travel expenses associated with program participation. The award may be applied to an existing research grant that supports the same research project or research focus area. Program participation is available in all ABTS disciplines (General Thoracic, Adult Cardiac, Congenital Cardiac and Cardiothoracic Critical Care).
